ith L. Ron Hubbard’s move to his research vessel Apollo in the late 1960s, and the formation of the Sea Organization to both assist that research and forward Scientology, a spontaneous musical tradition sprang up as part of shipboard culture. Appropriately, ship’s officers fondly recall Ron singing sea chanteys from memory, usually self-accompanied with ukulele.
The chantey had long been an LRH favorite. As early as 1932, he had entertained crews of vessels with such songs, and was factually somewhat of an expert on piratical lore - the leader of a nautical expedition to explore Caribbean pirate haunts and author of the 1930s Hollywood film, Secret of Treasure Island. The point being, he brought that fabulous world of sea dogs to life with an authority few balladeers could manage, and even kept a nautical tradition of music alive for the Sea Organization crew.
